The nakhla is the oldest symbol of hospitality in the Arab world, and this one is blown entirely by hand in our Cairo workshop: a clear glass trunk built from stacked, ruffled segments, a crown of green glass fronds edged in 24K liquid gold, four clusters of deep-red glass dates, and a five-point star base with gold-tipped feet. Twenty-one centimetres of glass, no two exactly alike.
It reads as a gift before it reads as anything else — which is why it sells in gift shops, hotel boutiques and corporate programmes, and why it moves fastest in the months before Ramadan and Eid.
