The date dish of the majlis, in hand-blown glass.
A tamriya is the footed dish that holds the dates in a Gulf home — on the majlis table all year, and at the centre of the iftar spread in Ramadan. Ours is mouth-blown in Cairo: a wide shallow bowl with a rim pinched by hand into a soft scallop and lined with 24K liquid gold, standing on a gold-rimmed collar, a clear glass knop and a tall trumpet foot finished with two fine gold bands. At 15 cm it lifts the dates to hand height, which is the whole point of the piece.
Each one is made by a single craftsman from gather to gilding, so the scallop, the depth of colour and the gold brushwork vary slightly from piece to piece — the signature of genuine handmade glass.
